Moving Around

You know it's hard on children to move every time the wind blows. I remember when I was a kid it seemed we moved almost every Christmas. That would be when daddy's agreement to farm would be over for the year. I also remember when my oldest son started to school one year my ex-husband moved us six times in one year! After I divorce him, we stayed in one place for over twenty years. Now I watch as he is adamant, that even though he and his daughter's mom are divorced, that she stay in the same school. He drives her to and from school on the days she is with him. That drive is a 50 mile round trip! That's how much he loves his girl. My daughter seems to be one of those who can't get in one place and be happy. She has moved her kids every time they get settled in. Please if you move every time the rent is due, think about what you are doing to your children!

Hunting Season....Use Caution

When I got up this morning there was a little chill in the air when I let the dog out.  As I stood there I thought about all the cool mornings I had spent in a deer stand. I didn't hunt like most people.  My husband had built several shooting houses on our property. My favorite was just a short walk from the house. From there I had some nice shooting lanes and could enjoy the quiet still of an early morning.  There is nothing like being in the woods as the sun comes up and the creatures start coming to life.  I have enjoyed things some never see, like a buck with frost still on his back and the steam coming from his nostrils, what a magnificent site. I've also watched as a red tailed hawk swooped down and picked up a squirrel for his meal.  As these wonderful memories came flooding back I also remember just how dangerous it can be to hunt. Can I Call The Crows Daddy

Sitting in the corn field on a cool fall morning with my dad, watching him call in crows and shooting them.  As we sat there he explained that if we didn't shoot them they would eat the corn before we could it all gathered in.  I was about five and he would sometimes let me call them in for him.  I can remember sitting so close to him that I could feel him breath. It was so warm sitting next to him. I felt protected from the world. We would stay out and shoot til about mid morning then we would go back to the house.  Sometimes daddy would then go and work with some of the other men gathering their corn and mama would work on our field.  We worked on the half with the man who owned the land.  What that meant in those days was he got half of everything that we grew.  I remember watching mama pull the corn off the stalk and throw it in piles on the ground.
