Cow Milk

Growing up on a farm we had a ready supply of milk, eggs and veggies.  I can remember going with Mama to milk since I was little and learning to milk is not as easy as you think.  My mom could milk twice as fast as my dad.  Yes folks before big dairy farms people fed and milked their own cows.

We moved off the farm after my dad hurt his back and drinking store bought milk was one of the hardest things to get used to.  Anytime I had the chance to come back to my sisters the first thing I did was run, not walk, to her neighbors house to get fresh milk.  Her name was Mrs. Mays and my sister would call her and tell her I was coming and she would make me cookies.  We would sit for hours and eating cookies, drinking milk, and talking about the differences between city life and living on the farm.

I haven't drank real milk in a long time!  It would be as hard to get used to drinking the real thing again as it was to drink store bought.  Times were harder and simpler then.  We have gotten away from all the things that made this country great.

Dog’s Life

The Author of this post is Kory Dotson

After our move, we went to glendale direct tv to look for the best deal for satellite TV. A few weeks ago, we were shopping in a small strip center that had a dog boutique located there. My girls and I walked through just because we are animal lovers, and we love to look at all the new and quirky products for pets. I could not believe some of the prices though in this store!

Clearly this store ran outside normal big-box pet supply stores. This store carried far more original and specialty items including organic homemade dog treats, handmade sweaters, and even “bedazzled” leashes and collars. I laughed thinking about my own pound-puppy wearing some of these outrageous sweaters and collars, but I have to admit they were pretty cute. That is, until you took a glance at the price-tag! I could not imagine paying nearly three times the normal price for a leash with rhinestones on it. My own dogs would end up using the sweater as a chew toy, and I am not sure they even chew their dog treats well enough to know if it was organic, handmade, or even edible! I guess my pooches are not fancy enough!

D's Truck

I thought I would give you an update on my grandson's truck.  The truck was running when my son traded for it, but it was leaking oil from the rear main really bad, so they were going to replace it.  My youngest son bought the rear seal and came to help my grandson put it in.  Well when they got it apart they discovered that the bearings were worn really bad.  So the boys decided it would be best to pull the motor out and go ahead and rebuild it.

I am really proud of D' because he has done most of the work so far on his own.  It is giving him a chance to learn about things that will help him all through life.  Thing like leverage, if you run across something way to tight for a ratchet, grab your pull bar or a pipe.  Little things that apply to fixing up an old truck and life.  Learning how to walk away for a few minutes when you can't get something to work right, instead of tearing it up.

I'll keep you posted and maybe I'll figure out how to get the pic's from my phone on here.  Have a blessed day.

Chicken and Gravy

It's approaching the time of year when chickens start to lay eggs.  (Oh for those of you who don't know, farm chickens don't usually lay eggs in the winter time.)  I can remember my mom starting to save the eggs so that we could get several hatching in before cold weather.  She would save at least 12 eggs and the first old hen that started staying on the nest all day got the eggs.  The hen would sit on the nest (the natural incubator) for 21 day and then their would be baby chicks hatch out.  There is nothing cuter than a mama hen and her babies!  Then when those babies get just the right size we would kill and eat most of the little roosters.

You might think that sounds mean if you don't know where chicken nuggets come from!  It was a big deal for us and the process of going out with my dad and picking out the one that was just right was a memory that I'll always have.  We would size each one up til we picked the best one, then mama would make fried chicken, gravy and biscuits for breakfast.  If I close my eyes and think about it hard enough I can smell it cooking.

Don't Lean On The Door

I have told you and told you, don't lean up against that door.  You are a very lucky young man that mama was quick enough to catch you!  Now shut that door really good and stay off of it.  My heart was racing as I had just pulled my fourteen year old son back inside the car!  He was leaning up against the door so he could look at me while we talked.  I had already told him not to lean on the door and as we turned the corner to head for home the door came open.  I reached over and grabbed his shirt in the middle of his chest and pulled him back in the car.  He had a huge hand print where I hit his chest as I was grabbing for him, small price to pay for not going out the door!!  His response was, "boy that was scary!".  Yeah, a little to scary for me!

Even with the mandatory seat belt laws, I still see children from infant to teens without their seat belts.  I know all the controversy that surrounds seat belts, but wearing one saved my life.  Please take all the precautions you can to protect the ones you love.  You might not be as lucky as me!

Valentine's Day

Today is suppose to be a special day to honor the love of your life, be it puppy love or a love that's stood the test of time.  As with all the other special days that we hold dear it has become so commercialized that it is no longer special.  Cupid's arrow now cost you more than you can afford.    I can remember when it was enough to get a single rose and a simple card but for the younger generation that simply isn't good enough!

I'm still old school...A rose is just a rose whither it be one or many if the one who brings them is not sincere.
A diamond is just a piece of coal if the one who gives it doesn't give it from the heart.
An expensive meal is only as good as the one you share it with.
Here's to true love, may it never make you blue
Remember it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.

Mommy, Mommy I can't see!

It was a typical morning, got Jimmy off to work then took a nap till our precious little boy woke up.  We had breakfast then the daily task of cleaning house.  He was all of three and was in his room playing, and I was cleaning in our room when all of the sudden he started hollering, "Mommy, Mommy I can't see!".  As I was running for his room I said what's wrong!  When I got to his room he says, "I got my eyes closed".  Scared me to death!  I hugged the little rascal and told him he shouldn't scare his Mommy like that.  Hmm!  That was only the beginning of scare Mommy to death!

That was about thirty-seven years ago.  There have been a lot of fast cars and motorcycles since then, not to mention roller hockey, asthma attacks, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and the Martial Arts.  I am really proud of him.  He turned out to be really good man and a great Dad.

Hunting Season....Use Caution

When I got up this morning there was a little chill in the air when I let the dog out.  As I stood there I thought about all the cool mornin...
